Vintage photographs often contain messages, mysteries and seeds of stories scrawled on the back. This piece is part of my Backstories series. The photograph of my mother and grandmother, taken in 1954, includes a message from my mom to her own mother. I manipulated the faded photograph in Photoshop and had it digitally printed onto fabric. I then traced my mother’s handwriting to bring her message to the front. Her words, written before I was born, remind me to be brave – to scale my own guardrails.
