This piece is based on a line in Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon. I have handstitched a “grawlix* patch” that reads $#!+ which can be stitched over the swear word in the quotation, if necessary.
* A grawlix is a series of typographical symbols for swear words. The grawlix was invented by Mort Walker, creator of the Beetle Bailey comic strip. They’re also called obsenicons, profanitype, warns and nettles.
