I am the keeper of my family’s old photos. So many times, the words scrawled on the back of a picture say more than the photo itself. This photograph of my grandmother, far from her Iowa home, gave me a glimpse into a woman I never knew, under the surface. “Alone” is part of a series exploring the words, handwriting and photos in my family archives.
